Why It Matters
Mississippi Ready loves a good story. Each family’s education journey is unique and motivates our movement to expand education access. Here’s what some Mississippians say about their journey. We’d love to hear yours!
Different Kids, Different Needs
The Moffett Family
We have four children in three different education settings – public school, private school and charter school. It was important for us to be able to put each of our children into a setting that was best suited to meet their individual needs. Our children have flourished because we have chosen settings that are best for each of them. As a parent you know your child best, and it’s important to have options for school. We need options in life because one size doesn’t fit all. Having options helps children find who they are and our goal for our children is for them to be happy, productive citizens in life.
Family Values, Financial Burden
The Jonson Family
Our three children are thriving in the private school we have chosen for them. We wanted our children educated in a Christian atmosphere, and while the benefits of this setting are immeasurable, the cost associated is very measurable. Despite both of us working full time jobs, the vast majority of our income goes to their education. The financial burden is great, but we know we are setting our children up for success in life. However, we also know we pay taxes, and our children should benefit from our tax dollars. Unfortunately, in Mississippi, we are still paying twice, while neighboring states are assisting families just like ours. It’s time to quit playing politics with our tax dollars—Mississippians should not have to wait any longer for school choice.
Nurturing school, Thriving child
The Jones Family
It was hard to watch our son Terrion become so painfully shy and reclusive because of the things he was experiencing at school. He was constantly experiencing new teachers in his public school classroom. They weren’t there long enough to get to know him, and he was beginning to withdraw. We knew we needed something different for him and we found it in a local charter school. He discovered a family atmosphere in his school, and we have gotten to see the real him again. He is friendly, lively, talkative and wants to participate in school activities. We choose to drive 15-20 minutes to the charter school because it gives Terrion what he needs, and we believe that all families should have choices in where their kids go to school.
